San Jose Dump & Landfill Guide
San Jose has several public places to dump junk. The main ones are Newby Island Landfill at the north edge of town (its address is in Milpitas), GreenWaste Zanker on Los Esteros Road, and Guadalupe Landfill in south San Jose. If you live in San José, the city’s free Junk Pickup may haul large items from your curb. Look up hours, fees and rules on each site’s own page before you go.
Junk Gone is a private hauling company. We are not connected with any landfill, transfer station or the City of San José.

What do San Jose landfills take, and what won't they take?
Each site sets its own list, and the lists change. In general:
- Often taken (confirm first): household trash, furniture, mattresses, appliances, yard trimmings, clean wood, concrete and other remodel debris. Some sites sort these into separate piles.
- Turned away at every site above: household hazardous waste, like paint, chemicals, motor oil, batteries and pool chemicals.
- Ask before loading: treated wood, soil, tires, electronics and anything with Freon. Rules for these vary a lot.
State law decides what’s banned from the trash; CalRecycle has the list. Junk Gone doesn’t haul hazardous waste.
What are San Jose dump hours and fees?
Hours and fees differ at every site. Some close early on Saturdays and around holidays. Use the official page on each card above right before you drive over. We leave hours and fees off this page so you always get the current ones.
San Jose self-haul tips
- Match your load to a site, then confirm its hours and fees online
- Unsure about one item? Phone the site first
- Tarp and strap everything so nothing flies onto 101, 280 or 880
- Most sites weigh you or look over the load when you pull in
- Gloves and sturdy shoes make unloading safer
- Paint, chemicals and batteries stay home for the county program
Some jobs are too big for a truck bed
The city’s free pickup works well when your items are already at the curb. A self-haul trip suits a few bags. A sectional on the second floor, a garage stacked to the rafters, or a whole house to empty is another story. That’s the work we do every week.

Recycling, mattresses and hazardous waste in San Jose

- Mattresses: When a store delivers a new mattress in California, it has to offer to take your old one back. Bye Bye Mattress lists drop-off spots too.
- Reuse ideas: the city’s San José Recycles site has reuse tips and the Junk Pickup steps.
