Which appliances do you take?

How does appliance removal work?

  1. Text a photo of the appliance and where it is.
  2. Get your price before we start.
  3. Prep it: unplug it, shut off the water to washers and dishwashers, and empty the fridge. Gas appliances (dryers, stoves, water heaters) need the gas shut off and capped before we move them. If you’re not sure how, call a plumber or your gas utility first.
  4. We haul it out with a dolly and straps, protecting floors and door frames on the way.
  5. Proper drop-off: appliances go to facilities that take them for recycling, and refrigerant units go where the refrigerant can be recovered.

Why can’t old appliances just go in the trash?

California treats major appliances differently from regular junk. Many contain what the state calls “materials that require special handling”: refrigerants in fridges, freezers and AC units, mercury switches in some washers, dryers and water heaters, PCB capacitors in older units, and compressor oil. According to the Department of Toxic Substances Control, those materials must be removed by a Certified Appliance Recycler before an appliance is crushed, baled or shredded. That’s why landfills and transfer stations charge extra for refrigerant appliances, and why you shouldn’t leave an old fridge at the curb or in an empty lot.

What does it cost to drop off an appliance yourself?

Will my city pick up an old fridge?

Some will, with limits. San Jose’s free junk pickups include refrigerators and water heaters. In San Benito County a refrigerator counts as two of your bulky items because of the Freon. Watsonville’s bulky program doesn’t take refrigerators or AC units at all. Check your city’s program, or skip the wait and have us carry it out. For big pieces, see bulky item pickup in Salinas, Monterey bulky item pickup, Watsonville bulky pickup or bulky item pickup in Santa Cruz. See the city-by-city breakdown on our furniture removal page.

How much does appliance removal cost?

It depends on the appliance, how many, and how hard they are to reach (a basement freezer or a second-floor washer takes more work than a garage fridge). Text a photo to (408) 310-0246 for a price before we start.

Appliance removal FAQs

Do you disconnect appliances?

Unplugged electric appliances are ready to go. Gas lines and hardwired units should be shut off and capped by a plumber, electrician or your utility before we arrive. Water lines just need the valve off.

Does the fridge need to be empty?

Yes, please empty food out of fridges and freezers, and tape the doors if you can.

Can you take appliances from a remodel?

Yes. We regularly haul old kitchen appliances along with cabinets, counters and remodel debris. See construction debris removal.

Do you take commercial appliances?

Yes, including restaurant fridges and equipment. Send photos so we can plan the crew and equipment.
