Santa Cruz has several appliance programs, and each has limits. City households on a single-family utility account get four free extra pickups a year, and each one covers a bag, a bulky item or an appliance. In Live Oak, Soquel and Aptos, GreenWaste offers up to three free bulky pickups a year, with no single item over 200 pounds. Capitola and Scotts Valley customers pay a small fee for GreenWaste.

A dead fridge at the top of a steep Westside driveway, a washer in a student rental, or three appliances at once will outrun those allowances. We carry the unit from wherever it sits, including stairs and long walks from the street. Empty and unplug it, have a qualified person cap gas and water lines, and text a photo with your address for a free quote and upfront pricing.

Where appliances go in Santa Cruz County

Where you can self-haul depends on your address. The City of Santa Cruz Resource Recovery Facility at 605 Dimeo Lane, off Highway 1 north of town, serves city residents and businesses only, with ID and proof of residency. Everyone else goes to the county: Buena Vista Landfill on Buena Vista Drive west of Watsonville, or the Ben Lomond Transfer Station, where operating days vary, so call first. Loads from the city, Capitola and Watsonville pay a surcharge at county sites.

Ask each site whether it accepts an appliance with refrigerant and how it handles scrap metal. When we make the haul, metal goes to recycling and working units go to donation where someone will take them, so you do not have to work out which facility accepts what.

Appliance jobs that fit Santa Cruz

  • Westside driveway fridge

A refrigerator sits in a garage at the top of a steep Westside drive. Two of us walk it down with straps and a dolly.

  • Student rental turnover

A landlord near UCSC needs a washer and an old range out between lease periods, with parking only on the street.

  • Pleasure Point remodel

A kitchen update in a beach cottage leaves a dishwasher, oven and fridge behind a narrow side gate.

Santa Cruz areas we cover for appliance pickups

Jobs range from beach cottages near Pleasure Point to Westside homes close to West Cliff Drive, student rentals on the Upper Westside by UCSC, and apartments downtown off Pacific Avenue. Live Oak is unincorporated, so county programs apply there rather than the city ones. All of it is on the Santa Cruz junk removal page.

Santa Cruz appliance removal FAQ

Does Santa Cruz pick up old appliances for free?

City households on a single-family account get four extra pickups a year through the city utility, each for a bag, a bulky item or an appliance. In Live Oak, Soquel and Aptos, GreenWaste's county bulky pickups apply instead. Call us when you need more than those allow.

I live in Live Oak. Can I use the Dimeo Lane facility?

No. That site is for City of Santa Cruz residents and businesses with ID and proof of residency. Live Oak is a county area, so Buena Vista Landfill or Ben Lomond is the self-haul route.

Will you carry a fridge down a steep driveway?

Yes. Tell us about the grade, the stairs and where we can park, and we bring straps, a dolly and a second person.

Do you clear appliances from rentals near UCSC?

Yes. Landlords and property managers use us between leases. Send a photo and the address, and mention any parking limits on the street.

What should I do about water in a washer or freezer?

Drain the hoses and let a freezer thaw first so water does not run through your hallway. Towels under the unit help.

Can you haul appliances from Capitola or Scotts Valley?

Yes. GreenWaste's paid pickup there covers furniture and small appliances, so full-size units are a better fit for us. We carry out any number of pieces.
