In Saratoga, the weekly pickup of garbage, recycling and green waste falls to West Valley Recycles, working under the West Valley Solid Waste Management Authority. For normal weeks the carts are enough. The pile that does not fit is a different story: a month of sorting a garage, a landscape redo on an acre of oak shade, or a stack of boxes after a family event.
We handle that overflow as a one-time job. You point out where the pile sits, we carry it from there, load it and take it away. You skip the rented bin and the series of dump runs, and we leave the cart service exactly where it belongs.
Where trash and green waste go
Cart contents go with the franchise hauler. For loads we take, we separate what can be donated or recycled, and send the rest to a permitted facility. People who haul on their own often drive to Guadalupe Landfill in San Jose, which is the closest public option from Saratoga; the county also lists Newby Island Resource Recovery Park in Milpitas, which does not accept hazardous materials.
Paint, solvents and similar products should be set aside for the county’s free resident program, held by appointment.
The kinds of trash we pick up
- Bagged household trash
Extra bags from a clear-out that will not fit in the cart this week.
- Cleanup debris
Packaging, floor scrapings, torn carpet and scrap pieces left by a project.
- Yard and green waste
Leaves, pruned branches, hedge trimmings and dead plants from larger lots.
- Mixed garage piles
A jumble of broken items, old paint cans set aside, and boxes that have built up over years.
Trash hauling versus bulky junk pickup
(a) Trash and garbage hauling means bagged household trash, overflow, cleanup debris and yard or green waste. If most of your pile is leaves and branches, see our yard waste removal page; we do not have a Saratoga-specific one.
(b) Bulky junk pickup means furniture, appliances and mattresses. That work lives on furniture removal, and our Saratoga page covers the whole picture. A single visit can combine both kinds of load.

Typical piles we clear around Saratoga
- Redwood and oak cleanup
Winter wind drops limbs across a shady back lot. We drag them to the drive and take them in one load.
- Garage sort-out
A family sorting a parent’s garage fills thirty bags in a weekend. The cart cannot take it, so we do.
- Hedge removal
A homeowner replaces a long privet hedge; the trimmings and root balls sit along the fence until we collect them.

Saratoga FAQ: Trash Removal
Do you take over from West Valley Recycles?
No. They handle your weekly carts. We only take one-time hauls and overflow beyond them.
Can you take yard waste and branches?
Yes. You can cut or bundle them, but a loose pile is fine too.
Is a couch trash or bulky?
A couch is bulky junk; bags, debris and green waste are trash. Either way we can load both on one trip.
Can I set extra bags beside my cart?
Check with the hauler about their rules for extra bags. If they will not take them, we will.
Can the paint cans go in the load?
Not those. Set paint, solvents and similar items aside for the county program that residents can book for free.
How small can a job be?
Small is fine. A photo is enough for us to say what the pile will cost.
