Weekly service in Los Altos is the job of the franchise hauler, Mission Trail Waste Systems, and for everyday garbage the carts do fine. The trouble starts with what does not fit: a week of remodel scraps, bags from clearing out a pantry, storm-fallen branches on a big lot, or a mountain of boxes after a move.
That is where we step in. We take the one-time haul-off, carrying the pile from wherever it sits and loading it ourselves. You do not rent a bin or make multiple dump runs. We do not replace your carts, only the trips and lifting that go beyond them.
Where trash and green waste go
Your carts are collected by Mission Trail, and the city also runs a seasonal resident-only compost station at the Community Center lot on Hillview Avenue. For loads that go beyond that, we sort what we collect: reusable items to donation, metal to scrap, and the rest to a permitted facility. The county lists Newby Island Resource Recovery Park in Milpitas as a public self-haul option if you prefer to drive it yourself.
Batteries, bulbs, e-waste and thermostats should not go in regular trash. Mission Trail has a program for those, and the county handles paint and chemicals by appointment. We cannot haul hazardous material.
What counts as trash for us
- Overflow garbage
Bagged household trash and boxes that outgrew the cart, collected in one visit.
- Cleanup debris
Drywall bits, packaging, scrap wood and floor sweepings after a project.
- Yard and green waste
Prunings, hedge clippings, leaves and branches piled beside the garage.
- Mixed junk heaps
The jumble left in a carport after a tenant, contractor or long weekend of cleaning.
Two kinds of pickup: trash hauling and bulky junk
Trash and garbage hauling covers bagged household trash, overflow, cleanup debris and yard or green waste. For branches and brush, see our yard waste removal service.
Bulky junk pickup is a different job: furniture, appliances and mattresses. Those have their own page, furniture removal, and mattresses have their own too. Many Los Altos visits combine both, and one trailer handles it.

Typical trash jobs in Los Altos
- After the oak branches come down
A storm leaves limbs across a deep backyard. We carry them out the side gate and haul them in one trip.
- Remodel week overflow
A kitchen redo fills the carport with bags, packaging and cut-off lumber. We clear it before the next trade shows up.
- Cart is full, pile is not
Two weeks of cleaning a parent’s pantry and spare room leave twenty bags behind the garage. We take them all.
Los Altos FAQ: Trash Removal
Do you replace my regular trash service?
No. Carts are Mission Trail Waste Systems’ job. We handle one-time hauls and overflow that the carts will not take.
Can you take yard waste and branches?
Yes, as one-time hauls. Cut or bundle them if you can, but we will take loose piles too.
What is the difference between trash and bulky pickup?
Trash means bags, debris and green waste. Bulky pickup means furniture, appliances and mattresses. We can take both on one visit.
Can I put extra bags next to my cart?
Ask the hauler for its rules, since overflow handling varies. If bags will not be accepted, we take them.
Do you haul hazardous waste?
No. Paint, solvents and chemicals go to the county household hazardous waste program, free for residents by appointment.
Is there a minimum amount?
No set size. Text a photo and we will say what a trailer space costs for your pile.
