Recology San Benito County handles Hollister’s weekly garbage, recycling and green waste, and our service is something else. We come for whatever ends up outside the cart: a mound of bags stacked beside the bin, a lot corner with old boards and a cracked chair, a garage turned dumping spot, or the mess after a rental turnover.

Such heaps appear all over, from older lots near downtown to newer west-side streets and rural properties at the edge of Hollister. We make a single trip and clear everything in one visit. No standing contract is involved. Donation and recycling come before the landfill whenever a piece qualifies.

Trash carts can’t handle

  • Extra bags and boxes

The surplus bags, cartons and wrapping beyond what the cart holds.

  • Garage, shed and side-yard heaps

Years of stored junk and castoffs propped against a fence.

    Cleanouts in Hollister

  • Wrecked furniture and mattresses

Pieces too large or too far gone to leave at the roadside.

    Mattress removal

  • Old fence and yard debris

Snapped boards, brush and clippings that overflow the green bin.

    Yard waste removal

  • Appliances and electronics

Things that call for separate handling, never a bin.

    Appliance removal

  • Project leftovers

Leftover remodel scraps and moving castoffs; larger loads are worth asking about.

    Debris removal

Where the trash goes

Whatever remains after donation and recycling goes to John Smith Road Landfill, the San Benito County landfill. Recyclable material can go to centers such as One Stop Recycling Center and RJR Recycling, and the dump guide lists what each takes, with links to the official pages.

Paint, solvents, motor oil and batteries count as household hazardous waste, so they never ride on our truck. San Benito County runs a program for residents, and the dump guide points the way. Good furniture and housewares can go to a donation center; see the donation guide.

Typical jobs we handle

  • Holiday leftovers

Gift boxes, packaging and old decor spill over, with a worn chair leaning on the bin.

  • Fence-line pile

Bags, splintered boards, a rusted bike and a mattress lean on the fence line, ready for one haul.

  • Tenant moved out

A tenant left trash bags and unwanted furniture in the garage, and the owner wants it open again for new occupants.

Garbage hauling or bulky pickup in Hollister

Garbage hauling: bagged trash and overflow, debris from a cleanup, and loose household clutter. Green waste on its own has a dedicated page for yard waste removal in Hollister, and repair-job rubble fits debris removal.

Bulky junk: sofas, appliances and mattresses go through Hollister junk pickup or mattress removal. If your pile mixes the two, text one photo and we will quote it as a single haul.

Questions about hauling trash

Is this a substitute for my weekly garbage service?

No. Hollister's carts are run by Recology San Benito County, and we are no replacement. We take single loads and the items carts refuse.

What stops my cart from taking it?

Carts come with size and weight caps, and they exclude couches, appliances and hazardous or loose material. Recology can walk you through your cart's limits. We deal with what is left.

Should I try Recology's bulky pickup first?

If free pickups remain on your account this year and the items fit, use them first. We are the call when you exceed the limits, or when an item is heavy or still indoors.

Will you take bagged household garbage?

Yes, when it is part of a single haul-off. We run no recurring route, so repeat pickup is not offered.

What can't you haul away?

Anything hazardous: paint, solvents, oil, batteries. We steer you toward the county's program instead.

Do I need to carry it to the curb?

No. Crew members walk in and carry out from wherever it sits.
