Santa Clara has its own way to handle bulky items. Through the city’s hauler, Mission Trail Waste Systems, single-family homes and townhomes can request an on-call pickup. As we understand it, one request covers up to three bulky items and two bags of debris from the front curb, and not every HOA takes part. Check the city’s page for the current details.

That works well for a couple of pieces you can set at the curb. It is less handy for an apartment, a fourth item, a sofa upstairs, or a crowded garage. In those cases we offer full-service carry-out: we come inside, lift, load and take it all. Text a photo to (408) 310-0246 and compare.

Not covered by the city’s program? We carry it out.

What the city offers, and where we come in

The city also runs an annual cleanup campaign by zone, typically in spring, with an allowance for bagged debris. Setting items out too early can draw a fine, so watch the dates for your zone.

We fill the rest of the year and the gaps in between: apartments, extra items, items upstairs, or loads that go beyond the program. Usable furniture goes to donation, and the remainder to a permitted facility. Mattresses can also be taken to free mattress recycling drop-offs through the state program.

Bulky items we regularly pick up

  • Sofas, sectionals and recliners

Heavy upholstered pieces, carried through hallways or down stairs.

  • Dressers, desks and bookcases

Solid wood and particleboard, whole or taken apart to get them out.

  • Mattresses and box springs

Any size, from any bedroom, including those stuck upstairs.

  • Cabinets and entertainment units

Old wall units, filing cabinets and cabinets from a kitchen or garage.

Furniture removal, couch removal and mattress removal in Santa Clara

The real work is getting heavy furniture out of tight spaces: a hutch in a townhome dining room, a dresser stuck in the garage of an older Old Quarter house, a sectional that went up the stairs of a condo near El Camino Real. We come inside, take apart whatever needs it and carry each piece to the trailer, so nothing has to reach the curb first.

Couch removal is the request we hear most. Sofas, loveseats, sleepers and sectionals are awkward on stairs and around landing turns, and a sectional often splits into sections that make the carry easier. Send a photo of the couch and the way out, and we reply with a free quote and upfront pricing. Pieces in good shape are set aside for donation when we can.

Typical bulky jobs in Santa Clara

  • More than three items

A townhome owner has a sofa, a dresser, a mattress and a desk to remove, and the city request covers only three.

  • Upstairs in an apartment

A resident near El Camino Real cannot carry a sleeper sofa down two flights. We do it, with pads on the stairs.

  • Garage cabinets

A homeowner has old wood cabinets and an entertainment center in the garage, and wants them gone without setting them at the curb.

Santa Clara FAQ: Bulky Item Pickup

Is there a free bulky pickup in Santa Clara?

The city offers an on-call program through its hauler, and also a yearly cleanup campaign by zone. Details and any charges change, so check the city’s page for current terms.

When is your service the better fit?

When the item is upstairs or inside, when you have more than the program allows, when you live in an HOA or building that is not part of it, or when you want it gone on your schedule.

Do I need to put things at the curb?

Not with us. We carry from the room, garage or balcony.

Can I use the city program and your service together?

Yes. Some people use the city for a couple of curb items and call us for the rest.

What counts as a bulky item?

Furniture, mattresses, large appliances and similar pieces too big for a cart. If you are unsure, send a photo.

When will I get a price?

Send photos and we reply with a free quote and upfront pricing, usually without needing a visit.

Can you take a mattress and box spring too?

Yes. Mattresses and box springs of any size are carried out from the bedroom, upstairs or down, and the quote follows the space they take in the trailer.
