Monterey households do have a city bulky-item option, and it is worth knowing how it works. Standard residential customers of Monterey City Disposal Service can book large-item curbside pickups, up to four items an appointment and four appointments a year. Most items are free, though some, like refrigerators and TVs, carry special handling charges. Items go to the curb.
That fits many jobs. It does not fit a sectional on the second floor of a New Monterey duplex, a piano, or an apartment with no curb of its own. We pick up from inside the home, the garage or the yard, so you do not have to drag anything to the street or plan around an appointment. We are a paid service; the city program is the free one when it fits.
The free programs, and where our loads go
Outside the City of Monterey, GreenWaste Recovery serves Carmel-by-the-Sea, Pacific Grove, Seaside, Marina, Del Rey Oaks, Sand City and Pebble Beach. Its residents get up to three Bulky Item Reuse collections a year at no added charge, each with a small limit of items. Unincorporated areas such as Carmel Valley go through Waste Management. Check each hauler’s page for current rules.
When we haul, usable pieces go to reuse where accepted, and everything else goes to ReGen Monterey. Mattresses are recycled there, since Last Chance Mercantile does not take them. The Monterey dump guide lists every program in one place.

Is there a free bulky pickup in Monterey?
For City of Monterey customers, Monterey City Disposal Service offers large-item pickup with set limits. Check their page. We are the paid alternative when items do not fit or you want carry-out service.
How many items can I put out for the city pickup?
Their published program allows up to four items per appointment and four appointments a year, with special charges for some items. Confirm with MCDS.
Do you take couches from upstairs?
Yes. We carry from any floor, and cut up what will not clear a stairwell.
What about a mattress?
Yes. Mattresses go to recycling at ReGen Monterey, since the reuse store there does not take them.
I live in Pacific Grove or Seaside. Can you still help?
Yes. GreenWaste Recovery has a limited reuse collection there. If your items exceed it, we can take the rest.
Do I need to move things to the curb?
No. We bring them out from inside the house or garage.
